Aside from her starring roles in projects including the “Fifty Shades” franchises and close friend Taylor Swift’s latest music video, Dakota Johnson is known for her stellar interior design taste and recently spilled some details on her newest home.
Before offloading her stunning midcentury modern “tree house” in West Hollywood for just under $6 million in June, Johnson, 36, moved into a new ultraprivate $5.3 million Hollywood Hills home.
In a Sept. 18 Vogue cover story, the “Materialists” actress explained that she moved into the dwelling in January with her 2-year-old rescue dog, Tokyo.
The move marks a new era for Johnson, who ended an eight-year relationship with Coldplay singer Chris Martin in June 2025. The couple were previously reported to have lived together in a $12.5 million Cape Cod-style estate they purchased in Malibu in October 2020, which they eventually sold for $14.4 million a year later.
“My life has just unfolded in a surprising way,” shared Johnson, who stars in a soon-to-be-released film adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s “Verity” alongside Anne Hathaway.
The fashion magazine reported that views of beautiful olive trees and the sky are all that can be seen from the massive windows of Johnson’s newest dwelling, which is what draws her to the property.
“That’s why I love this house so much,” the star shared. “You can’t really see another house from it. … It feels sacred.”
The home—which, according to Star Magazine, is a Mediterranean-style four-bedroom, 4.5-bathroom built in the 1950s—is tastefully decorated with an aesthetic that’s as warm and comfortable as it is elegant and feminine.
The property is located in Outpost Estates, a Hollywood Hills neighborhood that many entertainment industry A-listers have called home, including Brad Pitt, Orlando Bloom, and even Johnson’s mother, actress Melanie Griffith.
“Veiled by mature trees and embraced by lush gardens, the home feels like a world apart—a quiet escape suspended in the middle of the city,” said a social media post from Ome Dezin, the Los Angeles design studio that renovated the home before it was put on the market.
The home has plenty of cozy features, including natural-wood ceiling beams, organic tiles, and skylights that flood the space with sunlight.
The primary suite includes a fireplace, an expansive walk-in shower, and a soaking tub—a feature Johnson is sure to enjoy as she’s previously shared her penchant for baths.
“I’m obsessed with interior design,” Johnson explained. “It’s a little bit of a problem … I go into a black hole.”
Johnson admitted that she’ll often find herself swept up in online auctions, sometimes forgetting what she’s bid on until a shipment arrives at her door.
The decor-enthusiast recently finished transforming her new home’s TV room, which features a projector she looks forward to using to enjoy films. She may soon add a popcorn machine to fill the space with the buttery smell of the popular theater snack.
As she navigates her latest chapter, Johnson hopes to soak up more time at home, hinting that she may be working on fewer projects in the near future.
“I’ve worked back-to-back for so long that now I have this deep calling to shift my perspective a bit and maybe have a bit more of a real life. I’ve been gone for like, 20 years. The people in my life are so used to me leaving for months at a time,” she said.
Johnson also spends time in an additional property she owns in Colorado, where she enjoys nature and riding horses with her siblings.
Growing up, Johnson spent her time between Colorado and California after her parents’ divorce. Her mother and father, Don Johnson, separated when she was 4 years old.
Although Johnson has yet to show off her new space publicly, she previously opened the doors of her former home for an Architectural Digest feature, which went viral when the internet fell in love with her bold green kitchen.
During a 2020 interview with Vanity Fair, Johnson admitted she “sure was” surprised to see the reaction to her abode, though she noted she was unsure if she would consider herself a “trendsetter.”
The kitchen was just one element of the beautifully-curated midcentury modern home, which she lived in for a decade before selling it earlier this year.
Spanning 3,200 square feet, the estate featured stately glass walls opening up to a resortlike backyard with a pool and was filled with personal design choices that reflected Johnson’s tastes. For example, the primary suite included a custom pink bathroom inspired by a sweater from Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen‘s fashion brand, The Row.
The dwelling was designed in 1947 by acclaimed architect Carl Maston and has previously been described as a “masterclass in California modernism.”
