Easter on the French Riviera: Tradition, Lifestyle & Timeless Moments

Often during Holy Week, the deep-rooted Catholic traditions of the South of France come quietly to life—especially in the smaller towns. You’ll find moving processions and reenactments of the Passion, moments that feel both intimate and steeped in history.

One place that captures this spirit beautifully is the Plateau de la Garoupe in Cap d’Antibes.

The Garoupe Lighthouse stands proudly above the coastline, but long before its 19th-century presence, this hill was already sacred ground. The nearby Notre-Dame-de-la-Garoupe chapel welcomed sailors who came to pray for protection at sea.

Today, that sense of devotion continues. During Easter, some still make the symbolic walk up carrying crosses—connecting past and present in a powerful way.

For me, it’s also one of my favorite walks year-round—often with my dog. The climb is invigorating, and at the top, you’re rewarded with one of the most breathtaking 360° views on the Riviera, stretching from Nice to Cannes.

There’s also a charming outdoor café, and in the warmer months, soft live music fills the air as people gather, sometimes even dancing as the sun sets. Locals will tell you—this is the spot for a first kiss. 💫

Along the coast, from Monaco to Saint-Tropez, Good Friday is marked by solemn torch-lit processions—quiet, moving, and visually unforgettable.

And then… there’s the lighter side of Easter. 🌸

Across the Riviera, villages come alive with children’s egg hunts in gardens and historic parks. And of course—this is France—chocolate takes center stage. In Nice and Cannes, chocolatiers craft beautiful bells and delicate friture (little chocolate fish), a beloved tradition.

This year, Easter Sunday and Monday fall on April 5th and 6th. Highlights include the egg hunt in Menton’s Parc du Pian, as well as elegant Easter brunches at places like the Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat, A Four Seasons Hotel and the Fairmont Monte Carlo—perfect moments to gather, celebrate, and indulge. 🐣🍫

What I love most about this time of year is how it reminds us that living on the Riviera is about so much more than sunshine and sea.

It’s about belonging to a place rich in tradition, culture, and meaningful everyday moments.
