A 98-year-old Bel Air mansion built for the founder of the Los Angeles enclave is hitting the market.
The Spanish-style estate at 10772 Chalon Road is for sale with an asking price of $32.5 million, Mansion Global reported. The home was commissioned in 1928 by Alphonzo Bell, the oilman-turned-developer who created Bel Air and its country club. Architect Mark Daniels, who worked on Bel Air’s master plan, designed the 10,600-square-foot home.
Former residents of the home include Queen Noor of Jordan and the late film producer Steven Reuther, an executive producer of “Dirty Dancing” and “Face/Off.” Reuther added a theater and editing suite to the estate.
The 0.8-acre property’s owner Michael Wexler, founder and CEO of Maple Leaf Capital, bought the property in 2010 for $5.5 million. He started renovation construction in 2021 and wrapped up last month.
Rather than turn the mansion into another sleek contemporary trophy home, Wexler aimed to restore it to the standards of the 1920s. Local artisans handled the flooring, cabinetry, tile and marble work, including a formal living room fireplace carved from a slab. Designers Kendra Sosothikul and Paula Press of Studio Berosso weaved in modern touches such as Gucci wallpaper and Missoni carpet.
“At almost 100 years old. There’s a lot of palpable history as you walk through the home, mature landscaping that was also probably put in 100 years ago, and it has that old-world Hollywood Regency feel, which is really special,” Wexler said.
The renovation expanded the top floor by 500 square feet, adding two bedrooms and bringing the total to seven.
The home includes boutique-style dressing quarters in the primary suite, a gym converted from the original indoor pool, a wine cellar with hand-laid mosaic flooring, terraces and patios and an outdoor pool. Wexler planted 26 redwood sequoias around the grounds that could take 40 to 50 years to mature.
