Netflix’s latest true-crime documentary has viewers questioning just how well they really know the person living next door.
“Worst Neighbor Ever” delves into real-life disputes that spiraled into shocking acts of violence, fraud, and deception, proving that sometimes the greatest danger can be found just beyond the fence.
“‘Worst Neighbor Ever’ takes a deep dive into four different cases, each set in a seemingly close-knit neighborhood, until everyday quarrels spiral into harassment, intimidation, and sometimes deadly violence,” the streaming giant’s description reads.
Each episode of the show features a different case, with several of those impacted by the ghastly events interviewed on screen—retelling the tale in their own, chilling words.
Here, Realtor.com® lifts the lid on the terrifying true-life events depicted in the series—and what happened to those left behind when the cameras stopped rolling.
“She Finally Snapped“
The opening episode of Netflix’s “Worst Neighbor Ever” centers on a quiet Kentucky neighborhood where a long-running dispute between neighbors ended in tragedy.
The documentary follows Shawna and David Scott, whose relationship with former friend Frances Zaayer unraveled after she moved into a home across the street.
What started as an ordinary neighborhood disagreement steadily escalated through years of confrontations, police involvement, and mounting tension.
Despite repeated efforts to resolve the conflict, the situation reached a devastating breaking point when Zaayer forced her way into the couple’s home in 2018.
David was killed in the attack, while Shawna survived after being critically injured.
Through interviews with those closest to the case and archival footage, the documentary examines how a seemingly peaceful residential street became the setting for one of the country’s most shocking neighbor disputes.
“Midwest Meltdown“
Episode 2 of “Worst Neighbor Ever,” titled “Midwest Meltdown,” tells the shocking true story of a quiet Indiana neighborhood that was torn apart by a deadly explosion.
Monserrate “Moncy” Shirley began a relationship with career conman Mark Leonard, who convinced her to join an elaborate insurance fraud scheme in hopes of collecting a large payout.
Together, they filled Shirley’s home with natural gas and rigged it to explode while making it appear they were away, expecting only property damage.
Instead, the massive blast killed neighbors Dion and Jennifer Longworth, injured dozens of others, and destroyed more than 30 homes throughout the community.
Investigators quickly uncovered the plot, revealing that Leonard had manipulated multiple people into helping carry out the deadly plan.
Shirley eventually pleaded guilty and testified against Mark and his half-brother, Bob Leonard, helping prosecutors secure convictions.
The episode serves as a devastating reminder of how one reckless act of greed can destroy an entire neighborhood and forever change countless lives.
“Fear Thy Neighbor“
Episode 3 of the true crime thriller titled “Fear Thy Neighbor,” follows Miles and Melina Armstead as they settle into what they believe is their dream home in East Oakland, CA.
Soon after moving in, they become the target of former neighbor Jamal “JT” Thomas, who begins an escalating campaign of intimidation after being forced to leave the property.
JT repeatedly threatens the couple, vandalizes their home, and creates an atmosphere of constant fear that leaves them feeling trapped.
Despite numerous calls to law enforcement and repeated pleas for help, the Armsteads struggle to get authorities to take the threats seriously.
As JT’s behavior grows increasingly erratic and violent, neighbors also become alarmed by his actions.
The situation reaches a devastating climax when JT confronts Miles and fatally shoots him outside the family home while Melina is pregnant with their first child.
Miles’ loved ones describe him as a kind and devoted husband whose life was cut tragically short by months of unchecked harassment.
Investigators ultimately arrest JT, and he is later convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison.
The episode also examines the role authorities played, raising difficult questions about whether earlier intervention could have prevented the tragedy.
Through interviews with Miles’ family, friends, and neighbors, the documentary paints a heartbreaking portrait of a family forever changed by a neighbor’s relentless campaign of terror.
“The Executor“
The fourth and final episode in the series tells the shocking true story of Charles Wilding, a wealthy and reclusive man from Los Angeles who suddenly disappears, prompting concerned neighbors to contact authorities.
As police begin investigating, suspicion falls on his seemingly helpful neighbor, Caroline Herrling, who claims she has been appointed to manage his estate.
Detectives soon uncover forged legal documents, fake identities, and an elaborate scheme designed to steal Wilding’s fortune and property.
The investigation takes an even darker turn when authorities discover that Wilding had died and his body was hidden while Herrling continued pretending he was alive to maintain control of his assets.
The episode reveals the disturbing lengths she and her accomplices went to in order to conceal the crime and profit from the deception, making it one of the series’ most unsettling cases.
Herrling pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and, in 2024, was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison, where she remains incarcerated while also being ordered to pay millions in restitution.
Her accomplice, Matthew Jason Kroth, was also convicted and sentenced to nearly 17 years in prison.
