Historic 1927 Park Hill Tudor in Denver Hits Market for $1.59 Million

A 1927 Tudor in Denver’s Park Hill neighborhood has come to market for $1.59 million, marking the first time the home has been offered for sale since 1967.

Set on a wooded 9,148-square-foot lot, the four-bedroom, 2.5 bath home at 1755 Glencoe Street was custom built for Howard E. and Wilma M. Lorton. They founded the business that became Howard Lorton Furniture & Design that same year.

“Its story reaches from the Lorton family’s design and business legacy to the Lewis family’s civic leadership and the Kopels’ work in law, public service and civil rights,” says listing agent Aaron Luttrell of LIV Sotheby’s International Realty.

The Lortons sold the home in 1935 to Harry T. and Margretta B. Lewis. Their son, Harry T. Lewis Jr., grew up there and became a prominent investment banker who chaired the Denver Museum of Nature & Science and the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce.

Attorneys Jerry and Dolores Kopel moved into the home in 1967. Jerry Kopel served 22 years in the Colorado House of Representatives and helped lead efforts to integrate Park Hill. President Jimmy Carter appointed Dolores Kopel U.S. bankruptcy trustee for Colorado and Kansas, and she led a court reform pilot program that became a national model. Their son, constitutional law professor David Kopel, has lived in the home on and off since childhood.

“What distinguishes this 1927 Tudor is how much of its original craftsmanship and personality remains,” Luttrell says.

The living room features a wood-plank ceiling with solid-wood beams, original sconces and an Art Deco-inspired fireplace, and one of two wood-burning fireplaces in the home. Solid-wood trim and refinished white-oak floors with walnut surrounds run throughout, and an upstairs bedroom retains its original Lorton light fixtures.

The layout includes distinct living, dining and kitchen spaces. The dining room opens to an outdoor patio, and a main-floor den offers room to read or work. The finished basement consists of a family room, a bonus room and two walls of built-in bookshelves.

Recent updates have focused on the home’s systems, including a new roof, fresh interior paint, extensive plumbing and electrical work and a high-efficiency boiler for the hydronic heating. The upstairs bathroom keeps its distinctive original tile. An attached two-car garage can be reached from both the front and back of the property.

The home sits among Park Hill’s tree-lined streets and historic parkways, near City Park, the Denver Zoo and the Park Hill Library.

“For a buyer who values historic architecture, it is an opportunity to become the next steward of a home with a meaningful place in Denver’s story,” Luttrell says.
