From My Bilingual Journey to Your Family’s Future

Between April and May is the ideal time to begin school visits and interviews ahead of September entry.
The most sought-after schools fill quickly—so timing, as always on the Riviera, is everything.

When we moved to France in 1980, I was just 13. My parents made a very intentional decision: for my sister and me to be fully immersed in the French education system—not just to learn the language, but to truly integrate into the culture.

There was just one challenge… we didn’t speak a word of French.

We were placed straight into a French classroom, and that first year was incredibly tough. At times, it felt isolating, overwhelming, and yes—quite traumatic. We didn’t understand what was being taught, and we stood out completely.

But being thrown in at the deep end turned out to be the greatest gift.

Within a year and a half, we could speak, read, and write fluently. The moment I realised I had truly become bilingual was when I started dreaming in French.

Looking back today, I am deeply grateful for that experience. It shaped not only my language skills, but my adaptability, resilience, and ultimately my career.

Two years later, we transitioned to Centre International de Valbonne (CIV), where we experienced an international curriculum—giving us, quite literally, the best of both worlds.

🌱 The Riviera Today: A Strategic Choice for Families

Today, the French Riviera offers a far more international and sophisticated educational landscape than it did in the 1980s.

For families relocating here, education is no longer a compromise—it is an opportunity.

A Final Thought

If my experience has taught me anything, it’s this:

What may feel challenging at the beginning often becomes one of the greatest advantages later in life.

Choosing the right school here is not just an educational decision—it’s a lifestyle and long-term investment in your family’s future.
