The actions that will help you break through a plateau align with a framework that has stood the test of time: ask, seek, knock, Jimmy Burgess writes.

Feeling like your business is stalled right now? Maybe the market has shifted. Maybe your business has plateaued. Or maybe you’re simply trying to get back to where you once were.

Whatever the reason, that feeling is real. And if you’ve been in this business long enough, you know it’s not uncommon. Every agent goes through seasons where things feel harder than they should. The difference is what you do next.

As I’ve looked back over my career, I’ve realized that every time I hit one of those plateaus, there were a few consistent actions that helped me break through and move to the next level. Interestingly, those actions align with a framework that has stood the test of time: ask, seek, knock.

This three-step framework originates from a timeless biblical principle, but when applied to a real estate business, it becomes a practical roadmap that helps agents move from feeling stuck to building consistent momentum and growth.

Step 1: Ask, but start by giving

When most agents hear “ask,” they immediately think of asking for referrals. And yes, that’s part of it. But how you ask matters. Too often, agents fall into the trap of making awkward, transactional asks that feel forced. That’s not what works.

What works is leading with value. One of the simplest and most effective questions you can ask is:

“Is there anything I can do to help you right now?”

That question shifts everything. It positions you as someone who serves first. And when you do that consistently, something interesting happens: People naturally want to reciprocate. Now, when the conversation turns, your ask feels natural:

“Hey, by the way, if you hear of anyone thinking about buying or selling, I’d really appreciate you keeping me in mind.”

No pressure. No awkwardness. Just alignment. But asking doesn’t stop there. If you’re stuck, the most important questions you can ask are the ones you ask yourself:

What did I do when I had momentum?

Who is my ideal client?

What do they actually want and need?

Where are they spending their time?

Those questions create clarity. And clarity is what leads to action.

Step 2: Seek, because growth requires new inputs

Once you ask the right questions, the next step is to seek the answers. This is where many agents fall short. They recognize they need to grow, but they don’t actively pursue the knowledge required to get there. Seeking means becoming a student again. It means intentionally improving your skills in areas like the following:

Today, there’s no shortage of information available. You can learn from:

YouTube

Podcasts

Books

Coaching programs

Other agents

But here’s the key: Seeking isn’t passive. It’s intentional. When you actively pursue knowledge tied to the questions you’ve asked, you begin to see opportunities you were missing before. You begin to think differently. And ultimately, you begin to act differently.

Step 3: Knock — where everything actually happens

You can ask the right questions. You can seek all the knowledge in the world. But none of it matters without action. This is where the real breakthrough happens. “Knock” represents action. And in real estate, that action often looks like doing the very things you’ve been avoiding.

For some agents, that includes:

Here’s the truth: Growth almost always requires discomfort. If it feels comfortable, it’s probably not moving your business forward. So let me ask you this: What is the one thing you know you should be doing but haven’t done yet?

That’s your next move. Because I’ve never seen anyone break out of a rut without stepping into something that made them uncomfortable.

Why this framework works

What makes this framework so powerful is that it’s simple, but it’s complete.

Ask creates clarity

Seek builds capability

Knock drives results

When you combine all three, momentum follows. And momentum is what changes everything in this business. The agents who break through aren’t the ones waiting for the market to change. They’re the ones who change their actions within the market. And when you do that consistently, the next level isn’t just possible. It’s inevitable.

A key component of the proposal is the push for a single federal standard, with officials warning that a patchwork of state-level regulations “would undermine American innovation and our ability to lead in the global AI race.”

“The Administration looks forward to working with Congress in the coming months to turn this framework into legislation that the President can sign,” the announcement stated.

Diane Yu, CEO of mortgage technology platform Tidalwave, told HousingWire that a federal standard would accelerate AI adoption in the industry.

“We have lenders in all 50 states using our point-of-sale platform today. That means every new state-level AI law is something our compliance and engineering teams have to evaluate, interpret and build for, instead of spending that time making the product better for borrowers and loan officers,” Yu said. “A single federal standard would let us invest that energy into the product itself.”

Yu said she’s had conversations with lending executives who are ready to adopt AI but are stuck in legal review because their counsel can’t give them clear answers for what’s required on a state-by-state basis.

“Lenders already follow one national set of underwriting guidelines through Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Adding a second, fragmented layer of AI-specific state rules on top of that doesn’t create clarity. It creates paralysis,” she said, adding that “the direction [of the framework] is right” and that the mortgage industry is a federally regulated industry at its core.

“Lenders already comply with ECOA, Fair Housing Act, TILA, and RESPA. The GSEs set underwriting standards nationally through Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. And the federal guardrails aren’t theoretical. Freddie Mac’s Bulletin 2025-16, which went into effect March 3, requires every seller/servicer to establish a comprehensive governance framework for AI and machine learning systems,” Yu said.

“That means continuous monitoring, formal bias testing, alignment with NIST and ISO cybersecurity standards, senior management accountability, segregation of duties between AI development and risk oversight, and independent audits. That’s not light touch. That’s rigorous, mortgage-specific AI oversight, and it’s already happening at the federal level.”

While Yu is positive about the ethos of the framework, she said she wished the framework addressed mortgage-specific AI use cases.

“One thing that’s missing from most of the AI policy conversation is the distinction between companies that are actually deploying AI in production and companies that are just talking about it. In mortgage, that gap is wide. We’ve been in production with national lenders for over a year. That’s a different conversation [from] a company showing a demo at a conference,” Yu said.

“I’d also like to see the framework address something specific to mortgage: the industry already loses roughly $600 per loan on origination costs, and closing a loan still takes 43 days on average,” she added. “If the goal is to protect consumers, faster approvals, lower costs, and fewer errors are [key to] consumer protection. The right regulatory framework should make it easier for lenders to adopt technology that delivers those outcomes, not harder.”

Source: Vox – Supreme Court Second Amendment Framework

Who This Article Is For

If you’re a California gun owner with firearms as part of your estate, you need to understand how changing Second Amendment laws affect your estate planning. This guide helps California residents navigate the complex intersection of gun rights, inheritance laws, and estate planning to ensure firearms transfer legally to heirs.

How the Supreme Court’s Evolving Second Amendment Framework Affects California Gun Owners

The Supreme Court’s Second Amendment framework is undergoing significant changes, creating uncertainty for California gun owners planning their estates. Recent cases including Bruen, Wolford, and Lopez have reshaped how courts evaluate gun regulations, with direct implications for firearm inheritance and estate planning.

What’s Changing in Second Amendment Law

1. The Historical Test Standard from Bruen

Courts must now apply historical analysis to gun regulations

Modern restrictions must have analogous historical precedents

Creates unpredictability in how regulations will be evaluated

2. State vs. Federal Conflicts

California maintains some of the nation’s strictest gun laws

Federal court decisions may conflict with California regulations

Estate planning must navigate both jurisdictions

3. Implications for Firearms as Assets

Guns are valuable property that must pass through estates

California’s strict transfer requirements remain in effect

Failure to properly plan can result in illegal transfers or forfeiture

Why California Gun Owners Need Specialized Estate Planning

California has unique firearm transfer laws that make estate planning critical for gun owners. Without proper planning, your firearms could:

Be seized by law enforcement

Force heirs to surrender legally-owned weapons

Create criminal liability for family members

Result in valuable collections being sold below market value

Real-World Case Study: The $50,000 Gun Collection Problem

John, a Sacramento collector, passed away with 30 firearms valued at $50,000. Without estate planning:

His son inherited the firearms through probate

Several were California-banned “assault weapons” grandfathered under old law

The son couldn’t legally register them under current California law

Local police required surrender or removal from California within 30 days

The collection’s value was lost due to forced quick-sale conditions

With proper estate planning:

Firearms trust established during John’s lifetime

Designated successor trustees authorized to possess firearms

Clear transfer instructions meeting California legal requirements

Time to properly document, register, and transfer or sell firearms

Preserved $50,000 in asset value for heirs

Essential Estate Planning Strategies for California Gun Owners

How to ensure your firearms transfer legally to your heirs:

1. Gun Trust (NFA Trust)

What it is: A specialized trust designed to hold firearms

Benefits for California residents:

Multiple authorized users during your lifetime

Smooth transfer avoiding probate delays

Clear succession plan for trustees

Compliance with both state and federal regulations

Best for:

Collections with NFA items (suppressors, short-barreled rifles)

Multiple family members who use firearms

Valuable collections requiring professional management

2. Enhanced Estate Plan with Firearm Provisions

Critical components California gun owners need:

Will with Specific Firearm Bequests

Identify each firearm by make, model, serial number

Designate specific heirs for specific weapons

Include instructions for California-compliant transfers

Nominate executor familiar with firearm laws

California Firearm Transfer Requirements

All transfers must go through licensed California dealer (with limited family exceptions)

10-day waiting period applies to inherited firearms

Background checks required for heirs

Registration with California DOJ within specified timeframe

Executor Guidelines

Detailed instructions for securing firearms during probate

List of California-compliant dealers for transfers

Guidance on banned weapons that cannot transfer

Documentation proving lawful ownership and grandfathered status

3. Digital Inventory and Documentation

Create a comprehensive firearm inventory including:

Photographs of each firearm

Serial numbers and purchase documentation

Proof of California registration (if applicable)

Purchase receipts establishing grandfathered status

Appraisals for valuable or collectible items

Storage location and access instructions

California-Specific Firearms Transfer Rules

What California gun owners must know about firearm inheritance:

Immediate Family Exemptions (Limited)

Exempt from dealer transfer requirement:

Parent to child transfers (in some circumstances)

Grandparent to grandchild transfers (in some circumstances)

Still requires registration with California DOJ

Important limitations:

Does not exempt banned “assault weapons”

Does not exempt heirs from background check eligibility

Failure to register is a criminal offense

Probate Complications for Firearms

California probate creates unique challenges:

Extended timeline (12-18 months) for transferring firearms

Executor may need special authorization to possess firearms

Risk of theft or improper handling during probate

Public record disclosure of firearm ownership

Recruiting expert Brett Jennings explains why brokerages that organize their value into a clear growth framework stand out in a crowded recruiting landscape.

Attracting new agents is essential, but it’s not what truly sets great brokerages apart. The real differentiator is this: Can you clearly show an agent how they will grow once they join you?

Most strong brokerages already offer a lot — training, coaching, marketing support, technology, admin help, culture. But when you present that value as a laundry list of tools and features, it sounds just like every other recruiting pitch in your market.

Agents don’t just need to know what you offer. They need to understand how it all fits together so they can grow their business and improve their lives in a predictable way.

That’s where a framework becomes powerful.

Why frameworks win hearts and minds

A framework is a structured way to organize your ideas into a coherent, memorable model. Instead of throwing 17 disconnected benefits at a recruit, a framework groups them into a clear story:

It helps agents quickly make sense of what you do.

It shows how each piece connects to their growth journey.

It gives you and your leaders a repeatable way to present your value.

In other words, a framework turns your brokerage from “a bunch of stuff” into a system for success.

That’s why we created our own model to package our value: the SHAPE Framework. It transformed our pitch from feature-heavy to future-focused — and it’s been a game-changer for recruiting and retention.

Introducing the SHAPE framework

SHAPE comes from a simple idea: We help agents “get in shape” for the business and life they want.

Instead of selling isolated benefits, we walk candidates through a structured roadmap for their long-term success — before they join. That does three powerful things:

It shows we have a plan for their future, not just a place to park their license.

It makes our value easy to remember and retell.

It positions us as a growth partner, not just a brokerage.

Here’s what SHAPE stands for:

S – Systems

Operational excellence is the foundation. We provide proven systems — from CRM and lead management to listing workflows and marketing campaigns — so agents don’t have to reinvent the wheel in every transaction.

Systems make performance predictable and scalable. When you can show a recruit how your systems help stabilize and grow their income, you instantly stand out from the “you’re on your own” brokerage down the street.

H – Habits

Top agents don’t win because they’re lucky; they win because they’re consistent.

In our recruiting and onboarding process, we help agents build high-impact habits that drive production: daily prospecting, follow-up, database nurturing and time blocking. We also help them identify and replace the habits that are holding them back.

When your story is “We help you become the kind of person who wins,” you’re no longer just talking about tools — you’re talking about transformation.

A – Accountability

Everyone says they want growth; accountability is what makes it real.

We build accountability through coaching, scorecards, and regular check-ins. The message to recruits is simple: “We won’t let you fail if you’re committed — and we won’t let you coast if you’re capable of more.”

That kind of structure attracts serious agents and naturally filters out those who aren’t ready to own their results.

P – People

No one builds a great real estate business alone.

We highlight the people we provide: mentors, admin support, marketing specialists, operations and a community of driven peers. For agents coming from small firms or solo setups, this is often the most significant upgrade.

They’re not just joining a company — they’re joining a high-performance ecosystem.

E – Environment

The environment is where everything comes together. Culture, standards, collaboration, energy — agents feel it the moment they step into your meetings, trainings and events.

We intentionally design an environment where growth is normal, wins are shared, and support is expected. When recruits experience that, SHAPE becomes more than a framework. It becomes real.

Shape the future of your brokerage

A framework like SHAPE doesn’t just explain your value; it organizes it into a compelling, memorable story about agent growth.

Instead of leaving recruits unclear about what life at your company would actually look like, you give them a structured path to becoming the best version of themselves as agents.

When you package your value inside a simple, repeatable framework, you stop sounding like everyone else — and you start becoming the obvious choice.
